dividerAll About Cats

cute kittenThe domestic cat, or house cat, dates back many years.  Over 50 million years ago an animal called the Miacis, a weasel like animal, is believed to be the ancestor for today's house cat.  But it wasn't until 3500 B.C. that wilds cats becamed domesticated.  Egyptians started domesticating wild cats and turning them into pets.

The cat was treasured and honored in many artworks depicting the cats skill at hunting snakes, rats, mice and other rodents.  It was believed by early Egyptians that the glow from the cat's eye captured and held the sun's light.  Around 1500 B.C.  the cat was so revered that they were considered sacred by the Egyptians and if a person was to kill a cat they were punished by death.

As trade routes developed around Europe and the Middle East, the domestic cat was introduced to new areas.  Cat population began to grow in Europe, Asia, Greece and other countries.  It wasn't until the late 1600's that the domestic cat first came to America.  As people began to migrate from European countries they brought their pet cat.

Cats were still treasured pets and still honored for their ability to hunt rodents. In fact, when people first moved out west many left their cats behind.  But as rodents began to eat their crops the demand for cats in the 1800's was so high that they sold for up to $50.00 which was a lot of money back then.

Today there are more than 65 million pet cats in households all over the world. The domestic cat is still loved today and is a treasured pet for many.
