Circle
Shape Activities for Toddlers
These
circle shape activities will help your toddler or preschooler learn all
about this round shape.
Learning
shapes is a fundamental skill kids learn at an early age. With these
fun kids activities they will begin to recognize the circle shape from
other shapes.
Some
of
these toddler activities are a group activity while others can be done
as an
individual learrning experience.
Some activities
will incorporate additional shapes to help your little ones
pick out the right shapes. Add some color to these activities
to
help reinforce learning colors as well or even some counting
activities.

the links below to see each shapes activity or scroll through the page.
Also
try these shapes games for toddlers. These are group games
that
can be used by teachers, childcare providers or as a birthday party
game idea for toddlers.

Circle Shapes Activities #1
Ice Cream
Scoops
This
toddler activity will introduce multiple shapes (circle and triangle)
as well as color recognition and counting. After your child
completes this activity treat them to the real thing by having some ice
cream and cones ready and waiting.
Setup for the
Circle Shape Activities for Toddlers
 |
You
can use this circle
template (opens in new window) to have your child trace each
circle. These 6
circles
are all a different size. Or you can have your child draw a
big
circle and then have them draw another one each one smaller until you
have 6 circles.
Tip: You can make your own template for your child to trace
if they need a reference.
|
 |
Have
your child pick out 2 to 6 colors and color each circle.
|
 |
On
a piece of construction paper, draw three triangles (upside down) for
the
ice cream cones.
|
 |
For
the older toddlers, have them cut out each circle, otherwise, cut the
circles out for your child.
|
 |
Have
them place the circles in a row from biggest to smallest.
Have them tell you each color of the circles.
|
 |
Now
have them pick out the biggest circle and glue it on to the
top of one of the cones to create a single scoop ice cream cond.
Repeat this with the
remaining
circles on the other cones, creating a double scoop and triple scoop
ice cream cones.
|
 |
Have
them count the number of scoops on each ice cream cone.
|
This circle shape activity helps them learn the circle and triangle
shape, colors, sizes and counting.

Circle Shape Activities #2
Find the
Circle Shapes Activities
For
this toddler activity, you will need some items from your house or
classroom that are different shapes. This circle shape
activity will help
your
child pick out and recognize the different shapes of everyday items.
Setup for the
Find the Circle Shape Activity
 |
Place
several everyday objects with different shapes around the room or on a
table.
|
 |
Have
your child find all the circled shaped items on the table and set them
on a different table or area.
For
teachers and childcare providers, make sure their is one circle shape
for each child. Have each child go up to the table to pick
out
their circle shaped item.
|
 |
Have
the kids count how many circle shapes they found.
|
 |
Have
the kids say the colors of each of the circle items.
|
Here are some suggestions of some normal household or
everyday items you can use for the different shapes; Circles - buttons,
CDs, coasters, jar lids, paper plates, etc.
Other shaped
items can include place mats, cell phones, envelopes, rulers, etc.
You can always make some different shapes with construction
paper
as well if you want to introduce all the shapes.

Circle Shape Activities #3
Find the
Circle Shape Activities Coloring
|
|
You
can do this circle shape activity with just about any coloring page of
an item that has circle shapes. The directions below used the
dragon coloring page (to the right) as there are lots of circle shapes.
Just click on the dragon coloring page to open a big version
of this picture file (opens in a new window) or search the kids
coloring pages on this site for more options.
Tip: This dragon is best printed in landscape mode to fill up
more of the paper so be sure to change your printing settings.
Setup for the
Find the Circle Shape Coloring Activity
 |
Find a few coloring pages that
include one
or more circle shapes in the picture.
|
 |
Have
your child find all the circled shapes and color them in. You
can introduce color learning as well by telling them which color to use
for which circles.
|
 |
Have
the kids color the rest of the page.
|
You can have your toddler count the number of circles they see in the
picture and name off the colors to add some additional learning fun. |

Shapes
Games
For
even more circle shape activities, try some of these shapes games.
These games will introduce more than one shape but you can
turn
the focus on the circle shape (or whatever shape you want your kids to
learn for that day or week).

Shapes
Games #1
Upset
the Circle Game
This is a version of Upset the Fruit Basket but uses circle shapes and
2 other shapes of your choice.
Setup for
Upset the Circle Game
 |
Place an X on the floor with
masking tape each
child except one (leaving one person left standing).
Make
sure the X's form a circle and then have each child sit on an
X
(except the child who will start the game).
You can use chairs as well but if you don't have enough or the chairs
are too big for the toddlers, then the floor works great.
|
 |
Cut out several circle shapes with
construction paper and several
of another shape or two (depending on how many kids you have).
Make sure you have close to an even number of each shape used.
|
 |
Pass
out the shapes to each
child, alternating shapes as you go around the circle. For
example, circle, square, triangle, circle, square, triangle....until
all are passed out.
|
 |
The
toddler who starts off this game calls out a shape. For
example,
they would say "upset the circles". Each child with a circle
shape would get up and try to run to another X on the floor for a spot
in the circle.
At the same time, the person standing tries to
find an empty spot as well. The child left standing gets to be the next
caller. They can call out any shape that you are using in the
game. Additionally, they can call out "upset all the shapes"
and
everyone has to get up and find a new spot. |
This game can be difficult for the
really little ones, but for the 3 to 4 year olds this can be fun.
For
variations of this game you can use all circle shapes but use
alternating colors and change this into a color learning activity.
If you want to emphasize a different shape, then instead of
making a circle with the X's on the floor, make a triangle or square
shape (or whatever shape you want to focus on).

Shapes
Games #2
Pin
the Eyes on the Frog
This
circle shape activities game is a version of (yes you guessed it!) pin
the tail on the donkey. We used a frog as they have big round
eyes, but anything with a circle shape will do for this shapes game.
Setup for
Upset the Circle Game
This game works best with felt
cutouts and double sided velcro, but you can use construction paper and
double sided tape.
 |
Cut out the shape of a frog using green
felt or green construction paper.
You can use this cute little frog as a guide.
This file will open in a new window in PDF format so you can
save it to your computer.
|
 |
Now cut out several big frog eyes using
black felt or construction paper.
|
 |
Secure
the frog to the wall making sure it's low enough for the kids to reach.
|
 |
Give
each child two black felt eyes (with velcro or tape already on it).
Have them look at where the frog is on the wall.
|
 |
Now
have them close their eyes or use a blindfold, turn them around a few
times and make sure they end up facing towards the frog. |
 |
Tell
them to walk forward (without peeking) and try to place the felt eyes
where they think the frogs eyes would go.
|
This game is best with a group of kids as it is so cute to
see exactly where all the eyes ended up on the frog. If you
want,
you can write their names on their frog eyes so when everyone is done
you can tell who came closest and give out a prize or use different
colors for the eyes with each child having a different color.
