Ask Santa to write to a child this Christmas Making cookie dough ornaments is a tradition is our house.  Kids of all ages (even us big kids) can have hours of fun and decorate the entire tree with just these cute Christmas kids crafts.

First thing you need to know is how to make the cookie dough.  Now mind you, these  recipes are not for eating as it tastes nothing like the real deal.  Here you will find the traditional salt dough recipe, a salt dough cinnamon recipe and a cinnamon no bake recipe.

Traditional Salt Dough Recipe

Ingredients

3 Cups Flour
1 Cup Salt
1 1/2 Cups Warm Water

Directions

Mix flour and salt together.  Add water gradually and knead dough.  If dough is too dry, add water.  If it is too sticky, add flour.

Roll out dough onto waxed paper about 1/4" to 3/4" thick.  The thicker the dough the longer the drying (cooking time).

cookie dough ornaments kids craftsCut cookies into holiday shapes like X-mas tree, stars, candy canes, wreaths, ginerbread people or anything you can think of or have a cookie cutter for.  Although using cookie cutters is the easiest way to shape these cookie dough ornaments, they are not necessary.

If you have a steady hand and artistic flair, simply use a butter knife to cut out your shape.  Just cut slowly so as not to tear the dough.

Place Christmas shaped cookie dough ornaments into oven and bake.  Depending on oven temperature the time will vary.  For a 325 degree oven, bake for approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours.  For lower temperature, increase the time and check after 1 1/2 hours.

Tip:  For faster drying, increase temp to 325.  For slower drying decrease temp to 225.  The lower temperature helps prevent some of the "puffing" effect when baking the cookie dough ornaments.

To prevent curling, flip the cookie dough ornaments during cooking time.  Let the ornament shapes cool down completely and then decorate with acrylic paint, glitter glue, pony beads or what ever you want to add to make these ornaments stand out and look beautiful on your tree.

I find that for the toddler's, painting is the easiest option and they will have the most fun with this decoration idea.  Older kids like to get a bit fancier and may want to add some glitter, ribbons etc. to complete their cookie dough ornaments.

Cinnamon Salt Dough Recipe

Ingredients

2 Cups Flour
1 Cup Cinnamon
1 Cup Salt
1 1/2 Cups Warm Water

Directions

Mix flour, salt and cinnamon together.  Add water gradually and knead until and form into a ball.  If dough is too dry, add water.  If it is too sticky, add flour.

Roll out dough onto waxed paper about 1/4" to 3/4" thick. The thicker the dough the longer the drying (cooking time).

cookie dough ornaments kids craftsCut cookies into holiday shapes or even mix and match this cinnamon dough recipe with the traditional salt recipe.  Try rolling the dough into a long cord (snake like) for each of the doughs and then twist together.

The cinnamon dough is a darker brown while the other is a white and the contrast makes for a beautiful Christmas wreath or candy cane.  No need to paint these ones as they look great on their own.

Place Christmas shaped cookie dough ornaments into oven and bake.  Depending on oven temperature the time will vary.  For the rolled shaped ornaments, it is better to lower the temperature for a slower drying time to prevent cracking.

This recipe smells great while cooking and adds such a nice natural color to the ornaments.  We mixed and matched our traditional salt recipe with this cinnamon recipe for some really neat cookie dough ornaments.

Cinnamon No Bake Recipe

Ingredients

1 Cup Cinnamon
4 Tablespoons White Glue (like Elmer's)
3/4 to 1 Cup Water

Directions

Mix together cinnamon, glue and water.  Knead until consistency is that of cookie dough.  Add more water if needed (just a bit at a time) or add more cinnamon if too wet.

Cover and chill for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.  Take out of fridge and knead for a few minutes.  Place some cinnamon (or flour) on your work surface and roll out the dough to about 1/4" to 3/4" thickness.

cookie dough ornaments kids craftsSimply use cookie cutters or shape the dough into your Christmas design.  Lay your cookie shapes on wax paper and let them air dry for 3 to 4 days.  Turn them twice a day to prevent curling.

You can bake this recipe as well for faster drying.  Set oven temperature to 200 degrees and bake for 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

These ornaments add such a wonderful smell to your Christmas tree and look great. You can add decorations using paint, glitter, ribbon etc.
