Do you know much an elephant weighs?
An elephant is the largest land based mammal weighing over
10,000 pounds depending on the type of elephant. An African Savanna, or
Bush elephant, weighs up to 16,500 pounds. That's 8 1/4 tons! This
particular elephant is about 10 - 13 ft (3 -4 m) tall at the shoulders.
Do
you know how long an elephant's trunk is?
An African elephant's trunk is about 7 feet (2 m) long. The trunk
is actually a long nose and upper lip. The elephants use their trunk
for smelling and breathing. They also use it to pick up things and feed
themselves.
Do you know who is the leader of an elephant herd?
Elephants
live together as families. Groups of families are called a herd. The
oldest female elephant, called the matriarch, is usually the leader of
the herd.
Do you know where elephants live?
There are two kinds of elephants. The African elephant lives in
many parts of Africa and the Asian elephant lives in many areas of
Asia. They live in marshlands, grasslands, forests, deserts and
mountains. Elephants can travel over 6,000 miles in one year over their
homeland which covers an area up to 600 square miles.

Elephants
communicat in more ways than just their trumpet sound. Their body
language, such as the position of the trunk or movement of their fee,
is another way they communicate.
