Ghost Crafts for Kids
Halloween
Ghosts
This
kids ghost crafts idea takes some time and lots of yarn but will look great
hanging on your porch for some great Halloween decorations. Kids will
get messy with this one as they wrap the yarn around a balloon. Then
sit back and be patient while it dries before moving onto the next
step. See below for a full list of craft supplies and step by step
instructions to create this spooking Halloween ghost.
Supplies
1 Balloon

Liquid Starch
Medium sized bowl
Plastic container or smaller bowl
Black paper
Scissors
Glue
How to
Make This Yarn Ghost Craft
| Step 1 |
Lay out some wax
paper in your work area. Be sure to wear old clothes as you will get
messy with this kids craft idea. Have another bowl or plastic
container handy to place your balloon in as you need to. |
| Step 2 |
In your medium
bowl, pour in some liquid starch
(about half full). Blow up a balloon to the size of the ghost's head
that you want.
Tip: The bigger the balloon the harder it is to
wrap the yarn and harder for the younger kids to handle. However, the
bigger balloons will make larger ghosts that can be seen from the road. |
| Step 3 |
In your medium
bowl, pour in some liquid starch
(about half full). Blow
up a balloon to the size of the ghost's head that you want. Tie a piece
of yarn around the balloon where you tied it off. You will use this
later to remove the balloon.
Tip:
The bigger the balloon the harder it is to wrap the yarn and harder for
the younger kids to handle. However, the bigger balloons will make
larger ghosts that can be seen from the road. |
| Step 4 |
Cut a long
length of yarn (about 5 to 6 arm lengths long). Dip the yarn in the
bowl to completely soak the yarn. |
| Step 5 |
Take an end of
the yarn that is in the liquid starch and pull it out.
As you do this run your fingers between it to remove excess liquid
starch. Now wrap this length of yarn around the balloon creating criss
crosses and wraping over itself. |
| Step 6 |
Repeat steps 4
and 5 until the balloon is covered with yarn (leaving some holes and
gaps to give it a ghostly look. |
| Step 7 |
Cut several
lengths of yarn to create the
ghost's body. The length will depend on how big the balloon is and how
long your want the yarn to hang to create the body. These strips of
yarn do not have to be soaked in the liquid starch. |
| Step 8 |
While the yarn
wrapped around the balloon is still wet, thread the strips of yarn
through a hole around the bottom of the balloon. Bring both ends out to
hang down. Do this all the way around the balloon to create a complete
body hanging down from the head.
Tip: The ends don't have to be even, just make sure they are close. |
| Step 8 |
Hang your
completed yarn ghost craft to dry. This will take 2 to 3 days to
completely dry. Once it is dry pop the balloon while holding onto the
yarn wrapped around the balloon. Then simply pull on the yarn to remove
the balloon. |
| Step 9 |
Cut out some
eyes and a mouth using black paper and glue these in place. Gather the
hanging yarn and tie a piece of yarn around it loosely. |
This ghost crafts idea will look great hanging from your porch to make
your house look scary for Halloween. You can even hang this one inside.
Make some smaller ghosts to hang along side the bigger one. Or try
making some of these other ghost crafts to hang by his side.
