Handprint Xmas Tree Crafts

Kids Christmas Crafts

There are two different handprint Xmas tree crafts on this page. One uses the handprint cutouts while the other uses paint to form the tree.

Both of these kids Christmas crafts are a tradition for many people and have adorned many houses for years.

The painted one is the favorite and easiest for the littler ones. They simply paint their hand and then press on the paper to form the tree.

The second one does require cutting and may need some help from adults as the small curves of the handprint can be tricky. Even if your child cannot do the cutting they will still get in on the fun with gluing it on paper to make their tree. And of course there is the decorating once the tree is assembled.

So parents and teachers start tracing your child's hand and let's get ready to make some fun Xmas tree crafts.

Snow Covered Painted Handprint Christmas Tree

Be sure to have the kids cover their clothes before starting this craft as it will get messy. Cover your work area as well so that you don't get paint on the table.

How to Make a Handprint Xmas Tree Craft

Step 1 Place your construction paper on your work area. The top of the page will become the bottom of the tree so you are working with the paper upside down.

Step 2 Place globs of green paint in a container or paper plate. Place another glob of white paint in another container.

Step 3 Have your child paint the palm of their hand and the thumb with the green paint. Then have them paint only their fingers with the white paint.

Step 4 Have them press their painted hand on the paper near the top and close to one edge.

Step 5 Have them repaint their hand and then press again on the paper next to the first handprint. Repeat this until they have the bottom (first row) of the tree done.

Step 6 Repeat step 5 for the next row having them move their hands in slightly from the edge so the tree gets thinner at the top.

Tip: You may want to wait just a bit for the first row to dry so that you can make out the white from the green better. This is not needed but will make it look snowier.

Step 7 Keep repeating with painting and pressing until they have reached the top of the tree. The very top should only be one handprint. For this last handprint have them also paint the thumb white instead of green.

Tip: You can have them use a paint brush to fill in any gaps if their handprint did not fully transfer to the paper.

You can top off your Xmas tree by painting on a star. If you want, decorate your tree with glitter glue, ribbon or pony beads although this one looks nice just with the green and white painted handprints.

Handprint Xmas Tree Craft #2
Cutout Handprint Christmas Tree

This one looks best if you use different shades of green for the paper. Kids may need some help with the cutting but let them do the gluing and decorating which is the funnest part.

How to Make a Handprint Xmas Tree Craft

Step 1 Place your construction paper on your work area.

Step 2 Trace your child's hand on green paper and have them cut it out. Repeat this until you have enough hands to make a full tree.

Step 3 Take one of the handprints and glue this to the bottom of the paper near one edge. Repeat gluing on hands next to each other to form the bottom row of the tree.

Step 4 Repeat step 3 for the next row moving it in closer to the middle to make the tree slightly thinner with each row. Keep repeating this until you have reached the top of the tree.

Tip: If you use multiple shades of green make sure you alternate shades with each new row of the tree.

Step 5 Cut out a star with colored paper and glue this to the top of the tree.

Step 6 Decorate your tree using what ever you like. We used small drops of glitter glue but you can also glue on ribbon for garland, pony beads for ornaments, stickers or simply use a marker to draw on your decorations.

These kids Christmas crafts are so easy and inexpensive. The kids will have lots of holiday fun making these trees. Here is another handprint Xmas tree craft that stands so you can set it on a table.
