Kids Summer Crafts #1
Colored
Sand Art
This one is easy yet colorful. Kids of all ages can do this
craft with little supervision from us big kids.
|
|
Supplies
Sand
or Salt
Colored Chalk
Wax Paper
Plastic or Glass bottles (with lids)
Paper (to create funnel)
Plastic food containers
Toothpicks (optional)
Be sure your bottle is clear so you can see the colored sand once you
fill up your jar or bottle.
|
 |
How to Make
Colored Sand Art
 |
Lay
out the wax paper on the table.
|
 |
Pour
sand or salt on the
paper. Take the colored chalk and rub it back and forth over
the
sand until it has changed to that color. Be sure to press
hard as you rub the chalk to transfer the color. Repeat this
for all the
different colors you want and place each color in a container.
Tip: For the little ones, take a cheese shreddar or potato
peeler and peel some chalk chips on top of the salt. This
makes it easier for them to blend in the color.
|
 |
Take a clean, clear bottle and
place it on the table.
|
 |
Roll your piece of paper into a funnel.
Tape it in place. You can also use a simple food
funnel it you prefer.
|
 |
Pour the colored sand through the funnel to
create your sand art. Use different colors to create a unique
design.
Tip: Position the tip of the funnel in different places to
create a fun blend of the colors.
|
 |
Optional: To create an even more
unique look, take your
toothpick and poke through the sand on the side to blend the colors
creating a "V" shaped look all around.
|
You can decorate your lid with some ribbon at other items. We
glued on a few sea shells to match the beach sand theme for this kids
summer craft.
If you visit the beach this summer, be sure to bring back
some sand to do this kids craft idea. Or simply use table
salt
and make your own beach sand.

String or Yarn
Streamers or wide ribbon.
Crayons or Markers
How to Make a
Paper Kite
 |
Place
your paper horizontally on the table with the long ends on top and
bottom.
|
 |
Fold
in half taking the left side to the right side. Leave the
paper folded.
|
 |
From the folded edge at the top, measure
1/2" in and mark this
spot. From the opposite end at the bottom, measure 3" in and mark this
spot.
Draw a line from these two marks.
|
 |
Fold along this line from right to left and
then left to right to
make a crease for both wings. Pinching the first fold (the
straight fold) open up both wings and place a tape along the fold to
hold in place.
|
 |
Turn your paper slightly to where the point
is at top and the
angled fold in straight up and down. Take your stick and tape
across the top of the wings of the kite.
|
 |
Turning the kite over, punch a hole about
1/3 of the way down from
the top and about 1/2 inch from the fold. Secure the hole
with
tape or a paper reinforement. Tie your string or yarn through
the
hole. You can tape the end of the string to a popsicle stick
for
a handle.
|
 |
Lastly,
cut a length of ribbon or streamers to create a tail. Tape
the
tail to the bottom area of the kite. Decorate your kite and
take
it out to fly.
|
These are small kites but will give the kids lots of fun flying time in
the summer breeze.
Here are more detailed and illustrated pictures on the folding instructions for this summer crafts
idea.

Kids Summer Crafts #3
Summer
Paper Bag Windsock
This colorful and easy paper bag windsock will brighten up your summer
nights.
Supplies
Paper
Bag
Colored Streamers
Tape
String
Crayons, Markers or Paint
Hole Punch
|

|
How to Make a
Windsock
 |
Fold
the top of the paper bag down on all sides to create a cuff.
|
 |
Decorate
the bag with a summer theme like the sun, flowers, trees etc.
Tip: You won't see this drawing once you put on the
streamers, but you will see it when the wind blows the streamers around.
|
 |
Cut several different lengths and colors of
the streamers. Tape these
to the inside of the cuff and around the bottom of the bag.
|
 |
Punch a hole on each side of the bag.
You can use tape or paper reinforcements to make the hole
stronger.
|
 |
Thread some string through the holes and
tie in place.
|
You can also decorate the cuff of the paper bag with some ribbon to add
a bit more fun and color. Now simply hang your paper bag
windsock from a hook outside and watch in blow in the wind.

Kids Summer Crafts #4
Ice Cream
Cones
There's
nothing like ice cream in the summer. Your kids can make
these
ice cream cone crafts and hang them up to remind them and you that it's
time for some ice cream.
Supplies
Brown
or Yellow Paper
Colored Pom Poms (large, medium and small)
Glue and Tape
Pony Beads (optional)
Scissors
How to Make
an Ice Cream Cone Craft
 |
Take
a 1/2 sheet of paper and roll into a cone shape. Glue or tape
the
cone shape to hold in place. If you use glue, you may have to
hold in place for awhile until the glue begins to dry.
Tip: You can also use designer card stock. We used
a brown and white checkered paper that was perfect for this kids craft
idea.
|
 |
Cut
the wider end of the cone to create a straight, flat top.
|
 |
Place a good amount of glue along the top
of the cone and place a
pom pom on top. Press and hold for a bit until the glue holds
in
place.
Place a second pom pom on top of the first to create a double decker
ice cream cone.
|
 |
Optional: Glue small pony beads
on top of the pom pom to add some fun sprinkles to your cone.
|
These mouth watering kids crafts will have you wanting the real thing.
We created several different cones and then put them all
together in a small paper container using floral foam to stick the
cones in.
Then we decorated the container with some tissue paper and more pom
poms to make a delicious looking display.
