Do
you know how long a lion lives?
A lion in the wild can live up to 14 years but in captivity (like in a
zoo) they can live up to 20 years.
Do
you know what lions eat?
It is the female lions (or lionesses) that do all the hunting.
They hunt large mammals like antelope, gazelles, wildebeest,
zebras, buffalos and warthogs. Occassionally they will hunt smaller
animals like hares and birds. When the lionesses make a kill, the male
lions will eat first, then the female lions and then the lion cubs get
what's left.
Do
you know where lions live?
Lions used to be found in many areas of Europe, Southern Asia, Eastern
and Central India and all regions of Africa, today they only live in
Africa and a small part of India. There is of course the
mountain lion, sometimes called a panther, puma, cougar, catamount, or
painter. These mountain lions are not the typical lion you
think of when you think of lions. However, mountain lions can
be found in parts of Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America
and South America.
Do
you know how many lions are in a family?
A lion's family is called a pride. These prides can be as small as 3
lions
or as large as 40 lions. Generally there are no more than 2 adult male
lions in the pride. Even though female lions usually stay with the
pride for life, male lions may only stay a few years and then move on.
