Pilgrim Crafts for Kids

This pilgrim hat craft makes a beautiful Thanksgiving decoration. The pilgrim hat becomes the center for this kids Thanksgiving craft idea. The steps are easy but the results are amazing. You will need a terracotta pot, some black paint, colorful fall leaves and other craft supplies to make this beautiful Thanksgiving centerpiece decoration. Place this in a prominent place to really show it off.

How to Make a Thanksgiving Centerpiece
Pilgrim Hat Craft

Step 1

Using your black paint cover the terracotta pot. Set it aside to dry.

Tip: Acrylic paint or ceramic paint works best on this type of surface.

Step 2

Cut the center out of your sturdy paper plate. The heavy the paper plate the better. Paint this center black and set aside to dry.

Step 3

While the paint is drying, cut a strip of red paper about 1 to 1 1/2" wide. The width should be the same as the rim around the terracotta pot.

You can use a different color to match your color scheme. Cut a small rectangle shape from the black paper. Cut out a rectangle on the inside to form a buckle.

Tip: The easiest way to cut the buckle is to fold your rectangle in half (the long way). Then cut two small slits on each side of the center. Bend this tab and cut it off. Unfold the rectangle and you will have a buckle.

Step 4

Once the plate and terracotta pot is dry it's time to assemble your center piece. Start by glueing the terracotta pot upside down in the center of the paper plate circle.

Step 5

Glue on your paper strip to the bottom of the pilgrim hat. Then glue on your cut out buckle to the strip.

Step 6

Next use your plastic leaves and fall decorations and cover the outside rim of the paper plate. Make sure the decorations are not too high as you want to be able to see the pilgrim hat through the decorations.

Tip: You can use real leaves just make sure to spray them with a clear coating to preserve them.

Step 7

Lastly, fill in the hole at the top of the pilgrim hat (the hole in the terracotta pot). Use more fall leaves or other Thanksgiving decorations. We used a small plastic pumpkin from a fall bouquet we purchased at a discount store.

If you want to just make the pilgrim hat craft without making it a centerpiece, just leave off all the fall leaves and decorations. You can make a matching pilgrim bonnet to match the hat.
