Sight Sensory Crafts for Kids #1
My
Reflection CD Mirror Mobile
Supplies
2 Coat Hangers
2 Pipe Cleaners
Several old and scratched CDs
Contruction Paper or CD Labels
Ribbon
Hot Glue
Scissors
How to Make a CD Mirror Mobile
 |
Cover
the non reflective side
of the CD (the side with the words or labels) with construction paper
or stick a CD label on this side.
|
 |
Decorate
the covered side if you want.
|
 |
Lightly
buff the reflective side of the CD to remove as many scratches and
smudges as you can.
|
 |
Cut several strips of colorful ribbon
at
different lengths. Attach the ribbon to the CDs using hot
glue.
|
 |
Take 2 wire clothes hangers and place
one
through the other so that
the sides are each pointing in different directions. Wrap one
or
two pipe cleaners around the top to hold the two hangers together and
in place.
Optional: You can cover the entire coat hangers for a
prettier and softer look if you want.
|
 |
Now tie the ribbons with the CDs to
the
coat hanger creating different lengths of the reflective CDS.
|
 |
Hang your mobile somewhere so that
the kids
can see their reflection again and again as this mobile moves about.
|
An
alternative to using CDs is simply using cardboard
covered with reflective wrapping paper. You can cut the
cardboard
into different shapes to make it fun and a learning shapes craft as
well.
Another kids craft idea for learning all about the sight sense is to
create a fun house mirror. Kids
love to explore reflections in a mirror especially a reflection of
themselves. This fun house mirror craft will give the kids a
distorted
reflection of themselves and they will laugh at what they see.
Buy
a piece of mylar and place it in an old mirror frame. Cut the
mylar about 1 to 2 inches longer than the mirror. This way
when
you place it in the frame you can simply push the mylar to create a
convex or concave curve.
To
create a concave, simply push gently from the front of the poster board
until it creates a curve backwards in the mirror. A concave
curve
in a fun house mirror will make you look taller than you are (or a
stretched look).

Sight Sensory Crafts for Kids #2
My Little
Camera
Kids will have fun pretending to take pictures of what they see with
this kids craft idea.
Supplies
Empty Small Box
animal crackers
box works great
Construction Paper
2 Plastic lids from a water bottle or milk
Crayons, Markers or Paint
Scissors
Exacto Knife (adult use only)
Tape or glue
Shiny Wrapping Paper
How to Make a Camera
 |
Cover
the animal cracker box with colored contruction paper.
Tip: Double stick tape works really well for covering the
box.
|
 |
Adults
only: Using the exacto knife, cut a hole in the middle of the
box the same size as the plastic lid.
|
 |
Place
the lid in the hole but don't push too hard. You want the lid
to rest in the hole but not go inside.
|
 |
Cut a piece of ribbon to go from the side
of the lid to the side of the box. This will be your lens
cover strap. Hot glue the ribbon to the lid and the side of
the box.
|
 |
Hot glue the other lid to the top right
side of the box. This is the pretend trigger for taking your
pretend pictures.
|
 |

Poke a small hole in the back of the box
directly opposite of the hole that was cut in the front. This
is your peep hole that you will view the scene for your pictures.
|
 |
Now decorate your camera. You can
decorate both the front and back and sides however you like.
|
For a fun sight sensory activity using this kids craft idea, have the
kids go around the room or outside taking pictures of items they see
and like. Ask them to tell you what they see through their
peep hole.

Sight Sensory Crafts for Kids #3
Telescope
Supplies
2
Cardboard rolls (from toilet
paper, paper towels or wrapping paper).
Note: One
needs to be slightly smaller than the other to slide together
Construction Paper
2 Paper Fasteners
Crayons, Markers or Paint
Scissors
String
How to Make a Telescope
 |
Cover
each cardboard roll with
construction paper. If one cardboard roll is longer than the
other, then cut it to be the same size as the smaller one.
|
 |
Poke
a small hole at the top (about 1/2" from the top) of both cardboard
rolls.
|
 |
Poke
a paper fastener through the holes.
|
 |
Wrap a piece of string around the paper
fastener on the smaller cardboard roll.
|
 |
Slide the roll into the other roll and push
it in until it hits the paper fastener. Now wrap the string
around the paper fastener from the second roll. The string
should only be long enough so the smaller roll slides out from the
first roll but does not come out all the way.
|
 |
The paper fasteners and string is what
allows you to slide your telescope open and closed without the rolls
coming apart.
|
 |
Decorate your telescope and it's ready for
spying pirate ships or whatever.
|
This is another sight sensory craft that can easily turn into a sight
sensory activity. You can place objects around the room and
ask the kids to find them with their telescope.
