with the paint to give it texture)
Large poster board or paper
Paint Brushes (optional)
Paper Plates or plastic containers (for mixing the paint and food items)
How to Make Textured Art
 |
Mix
the different colors with a different item. Some suggestions
are using oatmeal, flour, coffee grounds, sand, etc.
|
 |
Set
the paper on the table and let your kids begin to create their painting.
|
 |
Have
them use their hands to they can feel the difference while painting.
Tip: They can use a paint brush to make fine details if
needed.
|
 |
Allow the painting to dry.
|
Once this kids craft is dry have your kids run their hand across the
painting to feel the difference in textures.
Another kids craft idea for textured painting is to get different items
to use for the painting. For example, find some yarn, thread,
cotton balls and even sand paper etc. Using regular paints,
paint a background for your picture. Then simply glue on the
different textured items to complete the art work.

Fuzzy
Craft Stick Puppets
This fuzzy stick puppet is a tiger but you can make what ever animal
you would like. Just think of the design and find the
materials to turn your craft stick puppet into your favorite animal or
object.
Supplies
1 Craft Stick
1 Toilet Paper Cardboard Roll
2 Cotton Balls
3 Pipe Cleaners
1 Orange Pipe Cleaner
Orange and Pink Felt
Black and White Marker
Scissors
Glue or Tape
Wiggle Eyes (optional)
How to Make a Tiger Craft Stick
Puppet
 |
Cut
several strips of orange felt for the stripes of the tiger.
Glue these on the cardboard roll.
|
 |
Cut
3 pipe cleaners in half. Near the top of the roll (just below
where the nose would be) poke each half of the pipe cleaner through the
roll on both sides of the nose. Push back on the pipe
cleaners (on the inside of the roll) to hold in place.
Tip: To help hold in place, tape the pipe cleaners down on
the inside.
|
 |
Glue
the two cotton balls on the roll. Cut a small triangle using
the pink felt and glue this above the cotton balls.
|
 |
Cut 2 larger triangles using the pink felt
and glue this to the inside of the roll (on top) to make the ears.
|
 |
Take the orange pipe cleaner and poke this
through the back of the toilet paper roll towards the bottom to create
the tail. Bend it to make it look more like a tail.
|
 |
Using the black and white marker, draw on
the mouth and eyes (or use the wiggle eyes).
|
 |
Now take your craft stick and glue this to
the inside of the paper roll (in the back).
|
There you have it. Your own fuzzy tiger puppet. Let
the kids feel the different textures of the felt and cotton balls.

Star Fish
Paper Mache
Paper mache craft projects are a perfect craft for kids to really use
their sense of touch. When putting together their craft they
get to experience different touches like the feel of dry paper, wet
paper and the slimy feel of the paper mache mix.
Note: This kids craft project will take several days as you
have to wait for each layer of paper mache to dry before doing the next
layer.
Supplies
2 Small Paper Plates
News Paper
Flour
Water
Brown Paper Bag Strips
Shake and Bake, Bran Cereal (crushed) and Cinnamon
How to Make A Paper Mache Star
Fish
 |
Mix
together 1 part flour and 2 parts water to make the paper mache paste.
It should be a glue like consistency.
Tip: Add more water if too thick and more flour if too runny.
|
 |
Take
several pages or your news paper and twist into two points.
Using more newspaper, create 3 more points of the star fish and tape
together.
|
 |
Place
the 2 paper plates in the middle of the star fish (in front and back).
Staple the plates together. This will form the body
of the star fish.
|
 |
Tear remaining newspaper into strips.
Dip each strip into the paper mache paste and place around
the star fish until completely covered. Let this first layer dry
completely (about 24 hours).
Repeat for the second layer using newspaper. For the third
and last layer, tear strips of brown paper bag.
Optional: You can use newspaper for the last layer and then
simply paint the star fish.
|
 |
While the star fish is still wet with paper
mache paste from the last layer, sprinkle the shake and bake and
crushed cereal all over the star fish. This will give your
project a rough texture like a star fish.
Now spinkle some cinnamon (optional) to add some darker brown colors
and a fun smell to this project.
|
This kids craft idea does take some time and patience but will be a
unique addition to any room's decorating ideas.
