Shapes
Games
For
even more oval shape activities, try some of these shapes games.
These games can be for more than the oval shape.
Just
modify them as you need to so that your toddler can learn all the
shapes.

Shapes
Games #1
Shape
Shifter
We call this game shape shifter but any name you want to give it
will be just fine. You can do this game with all the basic shapes or
just the circle and oval to reinforce the learning of these two similar
shapes.
Setup for
Shape Shifter Game
 |
Using masking tape, draw out a large
circle. This needs to be big enough for all the kids that are
participating.
|
 |
Now
draw out an oval shape using the same general area as the circle (see
picture to the left to get an idea of the layout). The idea
is to
allow the toddlers to see both shapes on the floor to see how similar
they are but also different.
|
 |
If
you want to add more
shapes, do the same with a square and rectangle, outlining each shape
in the same general area on the floor. Repeat this with a
diamond
and triangle shape.
|
 |
If
you have a larger group of kids, you can separate into 3 groups (1
group for each set of 2 outlined shapes).
|
 |
Now
have the kids hold hands and step on the tape to form a circle.
Using the lyrics below, have the kids chant the saying and as
the
words tell them to change, have them move from the circle shape to the
oval shape.
|
Here are the lyrics for the circle
and oval shape shifter game.
Circle / Oval
Lyrics
Look at me, look at me, I’m a
circle can’t you see.
But
with just a small squeeze here and little stretch there.
I’m
a shape shifter and my circle is gone into thin air.
Look
at me, look at me, I’m an oval now can’t you see.
But
with just a huff and puff and a step or two in
I’m
back to what I was when we began.
Look
at me, look at me, I’m a circle again can’t you see.

Shapes
Games #2
Make me an Oval as Fast as you Can
This is a game that can be done with just one toddler or many.
It's really simple and the kids can have a race to see who
can
create ovals from their circles the fastest.
Setup for
Make me an Oval
 |
Make several different circles out of pipe
cleaners. These can be different sizes and colors.
|
 |
The idea of this game is to have the
toddler pull on two ends of the circle to stretch it out into an oval
shape.
|
 |
To
play the game, set out
several pipe cleaner circles on the table. Then say ready,
set
go! and have the kids begin to turn their circles into oval shapes
until they are all done.
|
 |
You
can also add color
recognition to this game by telling your child to only change the red
circles to ovals and then change the blue, etc.
|
 |
Have
them count how many ovals they have made by simply pulling a circle and
changing the shape.
|
This could be a relay type game if you have many children like at a
birthday party. Have the kids line up in two lines at one end of the
room. At the other end, have two tables filled with circle
shaped
pipe cleaners. Each child runs up to the table, takes a
circle,
changes it to an oval and then runs back and puts it in a container.
First team to complete all the circles to an oval wins.
