Paper Ant Farm

There's something about bugs and insects that fascinate toddlers and ants are the ones they seem to love to watch the most.

So why not let them make their own ant hill loaded with cute oval shaped ants. Of course these cute little ants don't actually move around but your toddler will have fun with this kids craft idea.

After you are done with this fun oval craft, take the kids outside and hunt for ants.  They can have fun finding them and watching these little guys work.

How to Make a Paper Mache Ant Hill

The instructions below are separated out by the ant hill and then the ants.

Making the Paper Mache Ant Hill

bullet Create your paper mache paste by using 1 cup of flour to 1 1/2 cups of water.  Mix together.

bullet Tear up a bunch of old news papers, magazines, etc. into strips about 3 inches long and 1 inch wide.

bullet Find an oval shape disposable container.  We used the lid to a Wendy's baked potato meal.

bullet Place your oval shaped container on top of the paper plate and begin to make your ant hill with the torn strips.  Simply dip the strip of paper in your paper mache paste, wipe off the excess and place the wet paper on top of your ant hill.

bullet Completely cover the oval shaped container down to the edge of the paper plate.  Let this dry for 24 hours then repeat with another layer of paper mache.  Again let it dry for 24 hours.

bullet Put on one more layer of paper mache.  For this last layer, you can use brown paper bag strips which will give the hill a brownish color.  Once you are done with this last layer, and while the paper is still wet, sprinkle some sand on top.  If you don't have sand available just sprinkle some cinnamon on top to give it a brown sandy look.

Let this last layer dry completely before you paint it or glue on your ants.  If you didn't use brown paper for the last layer, simply have the kids paint it brown and sprinkle on some sand or cinnamon while the paint is still wet.

Making the ants.

bullet Using the black and red construction paper, trace 3 oval shapes for each ant, with each one smaller than the first.  You can use this template as a guide.  This is a PDF file that will open in a new window.

bullet Cut each oval shape out and have the kids paste them together to form the ant.  Make as many ants as you want.  You can even make big ants and smaller ones.  Although our project only used red and black ants, your toddlers can pick what ever colored ants they want.

bullet Glue each ant onto the ant hill.  Glue some on top and up the sides to make it look like the ants are busy on their ant hill.

bullet Using the black marker, simply draw on some legs, antennas, eyes and a mouth.

You now have a cute ant hill that the kids can be proud of.  If you don't have the time or supplies for a paper mache ant hill, simply modify this shapes crafts idea and draw a hill on a piece of paper and make the ants and glue them on the drawn ant hill. Either way, the toddlers will learn the oval shape with this fun shapes craft.

Oval Shapes Crafts #2
Eggs in a Basket

This shapes craft is especially fun around Easter time, but anytime of the year this craft will help your toddler learn shapes and distinguish the oval from a circle shape.

oval shape kids craft eggs in a basketSupplies

White Construction Paper or Card Stock
Colored Card Stock Paper
Crayons or Markers
Scissors
Straw or Easter Grass Filling (for basket)

How to Make Eggs in a Basket

bullet Using the white construction or card stock, cut out several eggs.  You can use this template as a guide for the oval shape.  This file will open in a new window.

bullet Have the kids decorate their eggs using markers, crayons, paint, glitter glue, etc.

Tip:  It may be easier for the little ones to decorate the eggs before you cut them out.

bullet Now to create the basket.  This step is for the adults as it is a bit too much for toddlers.  Take a sheet of craft paper.  This can be rectangle or square, it doesn't matter.

bullet paper box folding instructionsFold the paper in half.  Unfold and then fold each edge in to the center crease you just created.

Keeping the paper folded (with each edge folded into the center), fold the paper in half in the other direction.  Unfold this new crease and fold each edge into the center crease you just created.

bullet paper box folding instructionsUnfold your paper.  If should look like the picture to the right.

Now take each of the four corners and fold these in to the first crease.  Do not go past the crease.

Keeping these corners folded down, you should have some excess paper next to each folded corner.
bullet paper box folding instructionsTake the excess inner edge of the paper and fold this over the end of the corners you just folded in.  See image to the left.

Now gently grab each edge you just folded in and pull out to create the box.  You may have to recrease some of the corners to help hold the shape.
bullet paper box folding instructionsOnce you have completed the paper box (in this case, we are calling it a basket) create a handle for the basket using a 1" wide stock paper. Determine the right length by holding it up to the basket.  You can either glue this or staple it onto the basket.  I find staples work best.
bullet Now have the kids place straw or Easter grass in the basket and then they can place all their eggs in their basket.

For this oval shapes crafts idea, instead of making a paper basket, you could always use a real basket.  Have the toddlers take turns hiding the eggs around the room and then have the other kids go on an egg hunt.

You can have all kinds of fun toddler activities with this oval shapes crafts.  You can have the toddlers count the number of eggs, name the color of the eggs and of course ask them what shape the eggs are.  If you want to help them learn the different between an oval shape and a circle shape, try adding some colored paper circles in their basket and ask them to separate the oval eggs from the circle shapes.

Oval Shapes Crafts #3
Penguins on Ice

These oval shaped penguins are so adorable and make for a fun learning shapes craft.

oval shaped kids craft penguinsSupplies

White and Black Construction Paper or Card Stock
Orange or Yellow Construction Paper
Blue Construction Paper
Craft Sticks
Small Styrofoam Ball
Elmers Glue
Scissors
Crayons or Markers (optional)
Wiggle Eyes (optional)

How to Make Penguins on Ice

bullet Using the penguin template, select a side view or front view and print out the page.  If you want, you can simply draw out your own ovals to form the penguins.

bullet If using only white construction paper, have the kids color the different pieces of the penguin black (see picture for reference).  Color the feet and beak orange or yellow.

bullet Cut out each piece and have the kids glue the penguin together.  If you have wiggle eyes, glue these on otherwise glue on the eyes from the template and using a black marker, make the pupils for the eyes.

bullet Have them tell you which penguin parts are oval and which one is a circle and triangle.

Tip:  The penguins feet are actually oval but since they are small ovals they look a lot like a circle.  So if your toddler says these are circles, that's okay. The important thing is they can tell the difference of the body oval shapes from the head's circle shape.
bullet Once the penguins are all glued together and the glue is dry, have the kids take a craft stick and glue the back of the penguin to the stick.  Leave enough room at the bottom of the stick to poke into the syrofoam.

bullet Cut the syrofoam ball in half (so it has a flat bottom).  Stick a penguin on the craft stick in each half of the syrofoam.
bullet Using the blue construction paper, cut out a large oval shape.  Place the penguins on the ice (the blue oval).

Penguins are a perfect oval shape craft for toddlers.  They are so cute and full of ovals.  These are really fun to make at Christmas time or as a winter craft.  Add a scarf and a hat and they are all dressed for the cold weather while they ice skate on the ice rink.
