Shapes
Crafts for Kids|
|
These rectangle shapes crafts for kids are perfect for helping learn
the rectangle shape and tell the difference from this shape to other
shapes.
Learning shapes is fun with crafts and activities. So let
your toddlers and preschoolers have fun while they learn and let their
creative imaginations go wild as they try these kids craft ideas.
The
rectangle is often confused with the square for little kids. As
they are introduced to both these shapes they begin to see the
difference. With a rectangle shape emphasize that it has 2 long
and 2 short sides. Have them look at the sides of both a
rectangle and square so they can see the different lengths of the sides. |

How to Make a
Treasure Chest
 |
Cover
both rectangle bread tins with the brown or yellow construction paper.
This will require the glue gun so adult supervision is needed.
Tip: To cover the outside completely, place the tin in the
center of the paper and fold over the tin. You will need to
make folds and small cuts to have this fit over the sides smoothly.
|
 |
Cut several strips with the black
construction paper and glue this on the lid and the bottom close to the
edge.
|
 |
Take
two long strips and glue these across the top, leaving about 1/2"
hanging over the lid to make it look like leather straps.
|
 |
Now
it's time to really make your treasure chest look like it's make of
real jewels and gold. Use pony beads and glitter glue to
really decorate it up.
|
 |
Once
all the glue is dry, it's time to put the two parts together to be able
to open the chest and safely store your treasures. Using
scrap cardboard, take a strip about 2" inches long and 1" wide, bend in
the middle. Glue each end to the lid and the bottom of the
chest about 2" in from the side. Repeat this on the other side.
Tip: You may have to bend the crease in the cardboard a bit
more to ensure that the chest will open and close properly.
|
Now your kids have a perfect hiding place for their treasures with this
rectangle shapes crafts.

Rectangle
Shapes Crafts #2
Xylophone
This rectangle shapes craft is great for the music lovers.
The kids will have fun painting each note a different color
and place the rectangles in order by size.
Supplies
8
Large Craft Sticks
Wood Glue or Elmer's Glue
Paints or Markers
Construction Paper
Lid to a Box
2 Straws
2 Large Marshmellows
8 Large Craft Sticks (optional)
Bells (optional)
How to Make a
Xylophone
 |
Cut
7 craft sticks, taking about 1/2" off the first one and making each one
smaller by about 1/2".
|
 |
Paint each craft stick (including a
complete stick that has not been cut) a different color.
|
 |
Once
the paint is dry, lay the sticks out on the piece of construction paper
putting the largest first down to the smallest stick. Glue
them in place.
|
 |
Cut
the construction paper in the shape of the sticks to finish the
xylophone.
|
 |
Glue
your xylophone to the lid of a box. Decorate the box if you
want.
|
 |
Place
a marshmellow on a straw for the mallets in order to play this
instrument. You can paint the marshmellows if wanted.
|
 |
Optional:
If you want to create legs on your xylophone, simply glue two
craft sticks (in an X shape) to each corner of the box lid.
This will allow the xylophone to sit up off the floor to make
it a bit easier and funner to play their instrument.
|
 |
Optional:
To give this instrument some real sounds, we glued bells on
the bottom of the lid so when the kids hit their xylophone with the
mallets (and with the legs fashioned on the lid) the bells will jingle.
|
This is a fun shapes craft for kids who love music (and all kids love
to hear the sounds of music and bells). This craft helps with
not only learning shapes, but colors and counting as well.
They can name the colors as they paint their notes and count
the number of notes on their xylophone.

Rectangle
Shapes Crafts #3
Jewelery Box
This one is so adorable when it's all done and the little girls will
just love putting their special jewels and treasures in their own
jewelery box.
Supplies
1
Box
Colored Construction Paper
Rectangle Shaped Cardboard
Silver (shiny) wrapping paper or Aluminum Foil
2 Paper Fasteners
Scissors
Glue
Pony Beads
Crayons, Markers or Glitter Glue
Wooden Bead (optional)
Colored Card Stock Paper (optional)
4 Small Craft Sticks (optional)
How to Make a
Jewelery Box
 |
Find
a box That has the lid attached. We used a box from Tim
Horton's as it has a fancy front of the box.
|
 |
Using
a glue stick, cover the outside and inside of the box with the color(s)
of your choice. We used pink on top and purple on bottom.
|
 |
Decorate the outside of the box.
Use markers, glitter glue, etc. Anything goes and
this is the most fun part of this shapes crafts, so let the kids go
crazy and have fun mixing and matching colors, designs, etc.
|
 |
Once
everything is dried on the box, make a mirror for the inside by using
the rectangle shaped cardboard and cover it with the silver paper or
aluminum foil. Glue to the inside of the lid.
|
 |
In
order to keep the lid open while looking through the jewelery box,
simply poke a small paper fastener through each edge of the box (about
where the lid would go when opened). This way, when the
little girls open the box, they can set the lid on top of the paper
fasteners to hold the lid open and in place.
|
 |
Optional:
In order to make some compartments for the inside of the
jewelery box,
take your colored card stock paper and make a paper box.

for complete instructions on how to make a paper box. This
link will open a new window and a new website.
|
 |
Optional:
Last step is to give your jewelery box a handle.
Using a hot glue gun, glue on a large wooden bead.
This handle will make it easier for the kids to open up the
box and see all their jewels.
|
All though there are many steps to this rectangle shapes crafts, the
end result is well worth the time. Your kids will love this
special box to hold their stuff. Even though this is named a
jewelery box, with the right colors and decorations it can be a special
box for boys as well. After all, where else can they store
all their cars, trucks, etc.
