Square Shapes Crafts #1
Robot Ruckus
This kids craft idea is so much fun as robots are a favorite for kids
of all ages.
Supplies
Colored Construction Paper or
White Paper and Crayons or Markers
Scissors
Glue
How to Make a
Ruckus with Robots
 |
Make
several different sizes of squares using different colors of
construction paper. If you want, you can print off this tracing squares template and have
your kids trace and then color each square.
|
 |
Give the kids some a full sheet of
construction paper, stick glue (or Elmer's glue) and the colored
squares.
|
 |
Tell
the kids to make a robot using only squares. Let their
imaginations go wild and have a fun robot ruckus time.
Tip:
If you want to only focus on the square shape, let the kids
know
that they can only glue them on in the shape of a square (not a
diamond). But if you want to mix it up, let them turn their
squares and glue it on to look like a diamond.
|
That's all there is to this square shapes crafts. It doesn't
take much time or craft supplies but the results are unique and
individual to each child's imagination.

Square Shapes Crafts #2
Square Puzzle
This fun toddlers craft is just too cute when it's all done.
The craft supplies are simple and inexpensive but this craft
will also need some adult assistance.
Supplies
Craft Foam or Construction Paper
Ruler
Cardboard
Scissors
3 Large Craft Sticks (optional)
Wood Glue or Elmer's Glue (optional)
How to Make a
Square Puzzle
 |
Cut
a piece of paper (or cardboard) a square of any size. We used
5 1/2" X 5 1/2" square.
Tip: You can use this template
as a guide for a 5 1/2" puzzle
|
 |
Cut several squares ranging in size from
1/2" to 3 1/2". Select different colors as well.
The
sizes you will need will depend on your starting square dimensions.
For the 5 1/2" by 5 1/2" for our project, we used (4) 1/2"
squares, (6) 1" squares, (3) 1 1/2" squares, (1) 2" square and (2) 2
1/2" squares.
|
 |
Give
the square shapes to the
kids and tell them to fit all these smaller squares onto the piece of
paper you cut for the puzzle.
The rules are they cannot go over the edge of the paper and they cannot
overlap squares.
|
 |
Optional:
It is
sometimes hard for the kids to tell where the edge of the paper is as
they start to place their squares to fit together the puzzle.
So
we glued large craft sticks on three of the four edges. We
left
one edge open making it easier for the kids to put their square pieces
in the puzzle.
Tip: These larger craft sticks are about 5
1/2" long, hence the reason we selected this size for our square shapes
craft puzzle.
|
Kids will not only be learning all about the square shape but they
will be using their problem solving skills. This puzzle is
not as
easy as it looks as there are only a handful of ways the squares will
fit correctly onto the square puzzle base.

Square Shapes Crafts #3
Picket Fence Photo Frame
If you are like our household, you take tons of pictures and never
seem to have enough frames to hang up the pictures. So
instead of
letting those pictures stay on your computer, print them off and have
your kids make frames so you can show off those cute, adorable pics of
the kids and grandkids. |
|
Supplies
14 Craft Sticks
Wood Glue or Elmer's Glue
Paint
Paint Brush
How to Make a
Picket Fence Photo Frame
 |
Take
four craft sticks and glue together overlapping the ends so that the
middle forms a square.
Tip:
You will need to help the little ones know where to glue the
sticks together to make a square. You can mark the spot and
then
have the put the glue and sticks on.
|
 |
Once
the glue is dry, glue six craft sticks to the back of the frame.
This is what gives it the picket fence look.
|
 |
Now glue on remaing four sticks on the
front, placing the same spot
as the first four sticks that were glued on. Glue vertical
sticks
first, then the horizontal sticks. This will leave a gap
where
you can slide your photo into the frame.
Tip: This step is optional but if you don't do this then you
will have to glue your picture to the frame.
|
 |
Decorate
the picket fence photo frame.
|
 |
Slip
your picture in a plastic
sandwich bag (for protection) or laminate the picture.
Depending
on the craft stick size you used, the picture should be about 2 1/2" by
2 1/2". But measure just to be sure before you print your
picture.
|
Decorating these frames is half the fun so let the kids go crazy
with their choice of decorations and paint colors. You may
have
to do a second coat of paint as the wood craft sticks will soak up the
paint a bit.
After you are done with these square shapes
crafts, be sure to check out the square shape activities for kids.
