Crafts For Kids
Kids will love these triangle shapes crafts and have fun learning
shapes while making these kids craft ideas.
Pick
and choose from the triangle crafts below to help
your toddler and preschooler learn the triangle shape.
Although these kids crafts focus on the triangle shape, there
are other shapes involved so have your kids point out all the shapes
while they put together their craft.

Triangle Shaped Crafts for
Kids

Triangle Shapes Crafts #1
Pinwheel
Pinwheels have amazed kids of all ages for a long time. We
can all remember getting pinwheels at one time or another when we were
kids. So instead of buying them one this year, let them have
fun making their own by simply coloring a handful of triangles.
The
instructions below use an 8 1/2" by 11" sheet of paper, but any size
(rectangle or square) will work. Just make sure the paper is
not
too small that when all put together it is not big enough to catch the
wind.
Supplies
White Paper or Card Stock
Crayons
Paper Fastener (Brad)
Straw
Scissors
Pony Bead
Ruler
How to Make a Pinwheel
 |
Take
your 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper or card stock and find the center.
To find center, draw a line from one top corner down to the
opposite corner on the bottom using a ruler. Repeat for the
other
two corners. Where the lines intersect is your center.
|
 |
You
will now have four large triangles.
Tip: Draw the lines very lightly so that you will not see
them once the kids color the triangles.
|
 |
Have the kids color each triangle a
different color. As an colorful option, you can also draw the
four large triangles on the other side and have the kids color these
different colors than the front.
|
 |
Starting from the center dot, trace lightly
a 3" diameter circle or
simply mark a small line 1 1/2" from center on each diagonal line.
This is your cut to line.
|
 |
Cut each diagonal line down to the cut
line. Try not to go past this line.
|
 |
Now
using a sharp pencil, poke a hole in the center. Then poke a hole in
the upper right corner of each triangle, turning the page as you poke
so your holes will be on opposite corners of each other on the
triangles (see picture to the right).
At this time, also poke a hole through the straw about 1" from the top.
|
 |
Now
taking your paper fastener, grab each corner of the triangle with the
hole and put the brad/fastener through each hole so that all four holes
are held together by the fastener. Then put the fastener
through
the center hole.
|
 |
Take
your pony bead and thread this on the fastener on the backside of the
pinwheel. This pony bead is needed to let the pinwheel move
in
the wind. If you don't want the pinwheel to move, simply skip the pony
bead.
|
 |
Last step is to poke the fastener through
the holes in the straw and then gently bend fastener back to hold in
place.
Tip:
I find that if you place a ruler under the pony bead while
you
fold back the fastener the pinwheel will move better as the bead is not
pushed too close to the pinwheel, allowing easier movement.
|
These shapes crafts for kids will need help from adults to ensure
the measurements are somewhat exact and the little ones will need help
with the cutting. The hardest part is poking the fastener
through
the center hole and straw, so if the kids can't do this with their
little hands have an adult do that step.
Of course once the kids
get done with their pinwheels they will want to play with them.
Take them outside (and hope for some wind) and watch them
twirl.
A fun variation to this shapes craft is to use shiny wrapping
paper (like silver or gold). The kids can color the inside of
the
paper with the colors they select and then when you put the pinwheel
together, there is a nice mix of color and shining paper.
|
| These
really catch the sunlight and are very pretty. Or try using
two
sheets of paper of different colors and skip the coloring and just put
it together.

Triangle Shapes Crafts #2
Goat in a Boat
|
|
Although this shapes craft is just the goat, we call this one goat
in a boat as there is a cute, silly story that you can read out loud
once the kids make their triangle headed goat. The story is
silly
(like the silly old Billy goat) but does introduce several triangle
shaped objects within the story.
Just click here for the story. This
PDF file will open in a new window. |
Supplies
7 Small Craft Sticks
1 Large Craft Stick
Wood Glue or Elmer's glue
Google Eyes or Black Marker
Brown Construction Paper
1 Pipe Cleaner
Paint, Markers or Crayons
Cotton Ball
How to Make Eggs in a Basket
 |
Take
3 small craft sticks and
have the kids make a triangle shape. Then add glue to the end
of
each stick and let the kids put the triangle back together pressing
down where it is glued.
|
 |
While
the triangle is drying,
take the large craft stick and 2 small craft sticks. Tell the
kids this is a silly Billy goat so he has two arms and legs just like
them. Have them place the 2 small craft sticks where arms
would
go (about in the middle of the large craft stick).
|
 |
Using the last 2 small craft sticks, ask
the kids where the goats legs would go. Glue these one.
|
 |
Check to see if the goat's triangle shaped
head is dry. If
so, cut out a triangle with brown construction paper (about the same
size as the head) and glue this to the back of the triangle craft
sticks. Don't glue across the top as you will need to wrap
pipe
cleaners at the top for his horns.
|
 |
Now glue the triangle head to the top of
the large craft stick with
the point towards the bottom and the flat end of the triangle on top.
Place some wiggle eyes on the brown construction paper or
simply
draw them on with a black marker.
|
 |
Cut the pipe cleaner in half.
Have the kids shape each half
into the goat's horns. Attach these to the top of the head
through the top of the triangle to hold in place.
|
 |
Take the cotton ball and tear off a piece
and shape into a beard and glue onto the point of the triangle.
|
 |
Let the kids dress up their goat by
painting or coloring on some
clothes. My 3 year old grandson gave his a blue shirt, red
pants
and a red tie.
|
You could add to this shapes craft
by making a paper
boat with a triangle sail. The folding of this paper boat is
a
bit much for toddlers so an adult or older child may have to do this.
If you want instructions for the paper boat, click here. This will open a
new page to a new website.
You can use the goat in a boat story to further the kids learning the
triangle shape along with this shapes craft.

Triangle Shapes Crafts #3
King or Queen's Crown
These triangle shapes crafts will allow the kids to trace several
triangles as well as identify the circle shape with the paper plate.
Supplies
Paper Dinner Plate
Markers or Crayons
Pony Beads
Glue
Scissors
Glitter Glue (optional)
How to a King or Queen's Crown
 |
Find
the center of the plate
and make a dot. Then have the kids draw lines from this dot
down
to the inner edge of the plate. Tell them to make another
line
from this dot to form a triangle.
Tip: It's okay if the
triangles are different sizes (some skinny and some thick).
If
you want, simply draw triangles all around the plate and then have the
kids trace these triangles.
|
 |
Have
your toddler or
preschooler color each triangle. Have them tell you each
color
they are using. Have them count how many triangles they see.
|
 |
Poke a hole in the middle of the plate (big
enough to fit your scissors
through) and then cut out each triangle (on the two sides only - leave
the bottom of the triangle attached to the plate).
|
 |
Now
have the kids add "jewels" to their crown by gluing on shiny pony
beads.
|
 |
If you want, you can add some glitter glue
as well to make these crown's really sparkle and look like a real crown.
|
 |
After the glue is completely dry, bend each
triangle up so when the
crown is on the child's head, you can see the triangle shaped points of
the crown.
|
 |
Place the crown on your child's head.
If you need to adjust
the size to a bigger size, simply cut the triangle a bit bigger.
If it needs to be smaller, simply cut the paper plate at one
edge, bring it together tighter and glue back in place.
|
Kids will have fun pretending to be a king or a queen with these shapes
crafts. You
can even have some straws they can use as a staff. You can
add to
their staff by cutting out several small triangles and put them on the
straw using a paper fastener. You will need a sharp pen or
pencil
to poke a hole through the straw. If you have any old sheets
or
cloth, you can aslo cut out a triangle shape and have them drape this
over their shoulder to really do up the king and queen look.
