and counting.

Learning Shapes Toddler Activities
| Here are some fun ideas and activities you can do with your toddler to
help them learn and recognize the different shapes.
- Find the shapes of your home. Have
the kids go around the house and point out items that are the square
shape (like windows, boxes, etc.) Then pick another shape and have them
look for items.
Things like buttons, CDs, etc. make great
items for the circle shape. Doors and some windows are
rectangles. The triangle and diamond shapes may be a bit more
difficult to find so try cutting out different shapes using paper and
hang them around the house.
- Playdough fun time. Playdough is a
great toy for kids of all ages. The great thing about this
simple but fun toy is you can build just about anything you want.
There are many accessories that come with some sets that have
cutouts of the different shapes.
If you don't have
accessories, find different items they can use to press and mold the
playdough into the many different shapes.
- Mix and match shapes. You can cut out
different shapes (you can even use different colors to introduce
learning colors for your toddler). Have you toddler find the
squares. Ask them which other shape is similar (the
rectangle) and have them pick it out.
Do this with many
different shapes (and sizes as well) and ask them many different
questions about shapes and have them find the right card. You
can use these flash cards here.

their craft made binoculars. Don't forget to visit the sight

about sight.
- Smell

your

dough ornaments
using cinnamon. They smell great. This cookie dough recipe
can be
used for anytime of the year to make special decorations.
Here are even more smell sensory craft ideas for kids.
- Sound
- Kids, especially the younger toddlers, love to bang around some pots
and pans. So get them out and find different things they can
use
to bang on the pots and pans. For example, a plastic spoon
and a
regular spoon make very different sounds when they hit the pots and
pans. Try making some of these fun noise maker
crafts. If you had fun with these noise makers and
learning all about sound, try these other sensory
kids crafts for sound.
- Taste
- A fun taste sensory activity is the traditional "haunted house" idea.
Put a blind fold on your child (or simply have them close
their
eyes). Then give them different edible and safe foods
(nothing
yukky like at the haunted houses) and ask them if they can tell what it
is and what it tastes like. These items can be cheese,
cookies,
crackers, cereal, cinnamon toast, etc. Anything goes that
will
have a different flavor - you can even sneak in some of the dreaded
veggies. Here are some fun sensory
crafts for the sense of taste. Not only will your
kids have fun making these but they will love tasting their projects.
- Touch
- A fun sense of touch activity for kids to to put several items in a
box with the lid closed. Then create a hole big enough for
their
hand to fit through. Ask them to feel the items and see if they can
guess what it is. You can have a piece of sand paper, a
cotton
ball, felt, etc. to give them a variety of textures. For even
more touch sensory learning, check out these kids craft
ideas themed on the sense of touch.
